MDConnect for DOORS

The best way to connect DOORS to Eclipse

Designed to help IBM Rational DOORS users, MDConnect for DOORS provides full access to DOORS objects in the Eclipse environment. Users can easily view, filter and search for DOORS items while working with other Eclipse-based applications. Capabilities also include filtering by baselines and views.

MDConnect for DOORS is available for free and is complemented by commercial extensions allowing DOORS to link with other systems.

Browse

The MDConnect for DOORS view in Eclipse shows the contents of the opened DOORS database. All folders, projects and formal modules are shown, with the ability to browse the contents of the formal modules. The content of folders and modules is retrieved on-demand, to ensure rapid access to your DOORS objects.

Note: To activate this view, please proceed as follows: after successfully installing the plugins and restarting Eclipse, open the Windows > Show View >Other… menu. Then expand the MDWorkbench category and select the “MDConnect for DOORS” view.

Search

MDConnect for DOORS allows you to search for DOORS elements based on simple wildcard and character combinations. The search applies on the selected branch of a DOORS structure allowing you to narrow the search scope.

Filter

MDConnect for DOORS allows you to filter DOORS elements based on criteria, as well as the defined views and baselines for the formal modules.

Extend to applications

MDConnect for DOORS is complemented by commercial Extensions allowing DOORS to link with other applications.

The RSA Extension (for IBM Rational Software Architect and Modeler) is the first extension available.

System requirements

The DOORS Client software must be installed on the user’s workstation. In order to use MDConnect for DOORS, the user must manually open and login to the DOORS Client.

Eclipse EMF 2.4 or newer and Eclipse GEF
Eclipse 3.4 or newer
IBM Rational DOORS 8.1 or newer

NOTE: Running two instances of DOORS on a single machine, with two different user identities, may result in unexpected behavior. Connecting to DOORS through Citrix is not supported.

Connect DOORS to IBM Rational Software Architect

In conjunction with MDConnect for DOORS, the RSA Extension offers a smart integration of DOORS and Rational Software Architect allowing you to link modeling artifacts to DOORS requirements.

For developers working with Rational Software Architect (RSA) as well as Rational Software Modeler (RSM) and tracking their project requirements in DOORS, synchronizing data and maintaining traceability is often difficult and time consuming. MDConnect for DOORS offers a smart solution to edit, maintain and report traceability between requirements and model elements within a unique user interface.

Build links

Building Links Made Easy: Building relations between requirements and models can be done from either DOORS or Rational Software Architect so users can work from either environment according to their constraints.

Drag-and-drop can be done within Eclipse from the Project Explorer to the MDConnect for DOORS view or vice versa. Users can also drag-and-drop from the DOORS application directly to Eclipse, or create links manually within DOORS.By simply using drag-and-drop, users can visually build the relations and enrich their projects.

Generate BIRT reports

BIRT Reporting: MDConnect for DOORS with RSA Extension comes with a predefined BIRT report that displays DOORS traceability information. BIRT is the Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools project in Eclipse.

Benefit from dynamic reports

Built-in Dynamic Reports: MDConnect for DOORSwith RSA Extension offers built-in dynamic reports:

The «Objects not linked to modeling elements» report provides a list of all DOORS objects in the selected formal module that do not have incoming or outgoing links to a UML module.
The «Objects with suspect links» report provides a list of all DOORS objects in the selected formal module that have incoming or outgoing suspect links.

Analyze traceability and impact

Traceability and Impact Analysis: MDConnect for DOORS also contributes to the Rational Software Architect built-in Traceability and Impact Analysis tools. If a UML model element has outgoing links to DOORS requirements, these links will be considered during the UML impact analysis computation. Such DOORS requirements will be displayed as specifications of the UML element.
